It’s a fictional city based around the very realistic Covid 19 pandemic and a series of events that leads to an unraveling of a New Mexico town.  In all the film delves into a lot of different elements that came out in 2020 including both political tensions and racial discrimination that led to police brutality and the Black Lives Matter campaigns.   Centered around an ongoing feud between the Sheriff and Mayor of Eddington it’s a film that though fictionalized, most American’s can relate to that tension.

Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal who exceptionally portray these two very strong male roles.  Additionally Emma Stone gives a powerful performance as the wife of the sheriff who uses her own use of social media to tell the truth of what her husband and mother tries to portray or her fabricated history and rumored rape/abortion.  Finally Austin Butler shows up in the end as a hippie preacher trying to make things right in his own way.

All in all at 2 hour 24 minute run time, Eddington is a film that will have you laughing at moments especially as we relive the masking debate in New Mexico. All the actors to an exceptional job of portraying this while being humor to a dark age in America’s history. The sad thing is the history is not over but at least we can remember where we came from so as hopefully not to repeat our past. Only time will tell.

Eddington came out in theaters July 18th and is currently playing in one near you. It is rated R for some very intense bloody scenes but if you can stomach that,  it’s certainly one to consider for your summer movie viewing.
