"Whalefall" REVIEW

It’s a grieving son’s last attempt to seek his father in the one way that connected them: scuba diving. What ultimately starts as a harmless diving experience soon turns into a death defying mission when he gets swallowed by a sperm whale. Now he must use his father’s last words in order to figure out how to escape before the oxygen runs out.

All in all, the latest marine horror film contains some pretty awesome visual effects including real life diving into the deep ocean of the California coast. That combined with the apparent cgi of being trapped in the whale will send chills down your spine wondering just how the son will escape. Additionally, the film makers use techniques including time hoping from present to past flashback scenes which ultimaely helps to create the illusion of the son using his memories of his father's teachings to survive, while being at peace with the fact of him ultimately letting go of his father forever.

The film stars Resident Evil's Austin Abrams in a slightly more realistic take at deep water scuba diving as he uses the same skills to capture that kind of emotional pull of someone suffering from a suddent loss. Additionally The Dog Stars Josh Brolin stars as the deceased father who ultimately plays to crucial keys: one being the voice guiding the son while in the whale as well as the flashbacks that motivate the voice behind it.

All in all, Whalefall is a unique adventure not about a man eating shark like most of the summer blockbusters like to play with, but one of a whale and the impeding doom of what inevitably happens when a whale dies. That is called Whalefall and is a fitting example of humanity passing on their own legacy to that of their children.

Whalefall came out in theaters October 16th and is currently playing in one near you.
